When you don't feel like leaving the country New Mexico and other points nationally can be a nice eye opener to a completely different environment, cuisine, etc.

Highlights and some noteworthy points.

Zuni

The Zuni Mtns of the Mt. Taylor District have a rich and colorful history of railroad logging from 1892 to 1942. Mt. Zuni has beautiful scenery. Blue water state park is a very nice lake in the area. Gulf course and a couple casinos in the area. The Turquoise Mtn is 11'301'' tall, the highest peak in the Northwestern portion of New Mexico.

The surrounding area is the Sandia, Manzano and Sangre de Cristo Mountain Ranges. Hiking, Biking, hunting and scenic drives attract people from all over.

Plenty of winter activity as well such as the Mt. Taylor Winter Quadrathlon" which draws racing enthusiast from all over.

New Mexico is home to 26 magnificent scenic byways. In fact, eight of the 126 America's Byways are right here in our state! The America's Byways Program is part of the US Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and was established to help recognize, preserve, and enhance selected roads throughout the states. The US Secretary of Transportation recognizes these designated roads based on 1 or more intrinsic qualities - archaeological, cultural, historic, natural, recreational, or scenic.

Wheeler Peak is the highest peak in the state of New Mexico in the United States, with an elevation of 13,161 feet (4,011 m). It is located in the northern part of the state, northeast of Taos. It lies in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost subrange of the Rocky Mountains.

Whether backpacking or dayhiking, Wheeler Peak offers a spectacular outdoor experience. Big horn sheep are abundant but are wary of visitors. There are two main routes to the summit, the Bull-of-the-Woods Trail, and the Williams Lake Trail. The Bull-of-the-Woods trail (also called the Wheeler Peak Trail) is 16 miles round trip and is a well-marked class 1 trail, The Williams Lake trail to the summit is approximately seven miles round trip and is a steep class 2 trail, with the final 1000 ft being a rocky scree slope.
